A Postcard From New York

A few months ago I found myself in a planning meeting with Emma Meek of Miss Bush Bridal. I don’t remember how it started but somehow I had signed myself up as official photographer for an event at her legendary Ripley bridal boutique to cover the launch of New York bridal house JLM Couture’s latest collection in store.  As a wedding photographer I am not shy of working a long day and putting in some graft, but covering a styled shoot, a catwalk show and a cocktail party not only sounded like a hard work, but also a rather large project for anyone to pull off. I should not have worried.

So we discussed the styled shoot element of the day. It was clear Emma had been immersing herself in all things New York and her vision for the shoot not only grabbed me but I knew in an instant it was going to be an absolute corker!

Just some of Emma’s vision; “You have your Park Avenue Princess, the Tribeca girl and a ‘boy’. I was trying to work an androgynous Wall Street women but then too many images of a young Frank Sinatra, KD Lang and Elvis overtook me. Then I had this image in my mind of a poster that my hairdresser has in his salon of two drag queens going to Pride. That got mixed up with a bit of Studio 54 sexual ambiguity and it ended up with a hot girl in a suit.”

Well genius I thought, lets do it. So just last Friday we assembled our mighty team, descended on our last minute location(I wanted grey, concrete and just a touch of scum), and with the help of our New York cab and an added bonus of a Airstream that happened to be passing and got instantly nabbed, we produced a Postcard from New York. Oh and yes it would have been terribly cool to have waited a couple of weeks to share the entire collection of images with you but I have been overwhelmed with requests from people dying to see more images, so in the end people power and all that…….

This was special, and I want to thank the whole team who were entirely integral to producing the end results. I also want to say thank you to Emma Meek for asking me to shoot this important day for her. I have always said I just need the opportunities to prove myself, and she has provided them in bucketfuls.

There is more to come including images from the catwalk and fabulous styling ideas provided by a whole host of suppliers back at Miss Bush on the day.
